You’ve heard of Pen Pals but what about Art Pals? Students in the Art Club at Canfield High School have partnered with artists at Briarfield Ashley Circle, a nursing home in Austintown. The students have been exchanging artwork since December. Kate Antal, CHS instructor says, “I thought this would be a good experience for the kids.  They are seeing how this is a form of art therapy and how it’s working at Ashley Circle.” Several of the students in the Art Club have expressed an interest in continuing their education in the field of art therapy.

Per the American At Therapy Association, “Art therapy is a mental health profession in which clients, facilitated by the art therapist, use art media, the creative process, and the resulting artwork to explore their feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, manage behavior and addictions, develop social skills, improve reality orientation, reduce anxiety, and increase self-esteem.”  Art therapy requires knowledge of visual art and counseling theories.
