A Message from the Superintendent to the Community

Mr. Geordan

February 19, 2018

Dear Canfield Community,

In light of the recent tragic events in Florida, I realize that concerns about the safety of your youngsters, as well as the security measures and practices we have in place, are topics in many homes.  As the Superintendent of the Canfield Schools, I can assure you that we take the safety of our students and staff seriously.  I wanted you to be aware of the security measures already in place throughout the District.

Over the last five years we have:

  • Installed a buzzer system at each building main entrance

  • Installed video cameras in each building

  • Installed panic buttons in each building that alert CPD immediately when depressed

  • Equipped administrators with new 2 way radios

  • Installed a new Key Fob entry system for staff in each building

  • Created Safety Plans in collaboration with Homeland Security

  • Trained all staff using Safe Schools Online

  • Trained all staff in ALICE (#1 Active shooter civilian response training for all organizations)

  • Trained staff in seclusion & restraint procedures

  • Installed a new PA system at CHS that communicates not only inside but outside as well

I hope by sharing this information, I’ve eased some of your concerns.  I realize that we cannot prevent tragic things from happening in our community or in our schools.  However, we are continuously working to educate children on how to stay safe, preparing our staff to respond appropriately, and using our resources effectively.

Additionally, we need your help.  Please do not prop doors open when bringing items into the buildings.  Please do not open any doors for anyone at any time.  All people entering our buildings must be individually buzzed in after identifying the reason for the visit at a main entrance.  Please talk to your children about the importance of being mindful of their surroundings as well as speaking to a staff member if they are alerted of any possible problem.

Our staff is deeply committed to prevention, education, intervention, and swift action for the safety and well being of our students. If you have suggestions or questions, please share them with us.

Educationally,

Alex G. Geordan
