Canfield Local School District Highest in Tri-county Area in Performance Index

report card

On the 2017-2018 State Report card, the Canfield Local School District is once again the highest in the Tri-County area for performance index scoring 104.3! Last year Canfield scored 103. The Performance Index measures the test results of every student at their own ability level.

Alex Geordan, Superintendent says, “While we are excited about these results, we recognize there is still room for improvement.  As a district, we are going to focus on the areas of the report card that can be improved.”

Some of the categories that make up Ohio’s Report card are:

Achievement: This measure is comprised of the Performance Index and Indicators Met.  Essentially, the Achievement measure answers the question “How many students passed the state test and how well did they do?”  Canfield received a B in Performance Index (only 6 Ohio districts received an A) and Canfield received an A in Indicators Met. Last year Canfield received C.

Gap Closing: This measure shows how well students are doing in reading, math, and graduation.  It answers “Is every student succeeding, regardless of income, race, ethnicity, or disability?” Canfield received an A in Gap Closing. Last year Canfield received a B.

Progress (Value Added): This measure represents the average progress for students in math and reading in grades 4-8. It answers “Did students get a year’s worth of growth? Did they get more or less?” Canfield received a B. Last year Canfield received a B.

Graduation Rate: This measure answers the question “How many 9th graders graduated in 4 or 5 years?” Canfield received an A in both 4 and 5 year graduation rates. Canfield received the same grades last year.

This report card also measured Financial Data. The Canfield Local School District spends 70.5 % of its funds on classroom instruction.  This amounts to a cost per pupil expenditure of $8,713.  The state average is $9,149.  Geordan says, “This is important to note because we are achieving spectacular results while also being good stewards of our money.” Only five districts spend similar dollar figures per pupil and perform at or better than Canfield. All other districts with higher achievement rates spend much more per pupil.

Geordan says, “The State Report Card is only one avenue to measure a school district. I assure you that we will continue to look at how we can improve on the Report Card and other measures to guarantee the most positive experience for our youngsters. It is a great time to be a Cardinal!”
