It’s the 20th year of the CHRISTIE Campaign at Hilltop Elementary School and the students will see their principal isn’t afraid of anything! The CHRISTIE Campaign (Children Helping Readers in Situations That Involve Everyone) is a read-a-thon program. This year the theme is Share the Experience- READ! and the student body was challenged to read 100,000 minutes and they did! On May 4, 2018 at 2:30 p.m. in the Hilltop gymnasium, Joe Maroni will take center stage. He will read "The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything" and Hilltop’s "The Principal Who Was Not Afraid of Anything." During the second reading the students will dress Mr. Maroni in children's literature classics attire (ex: Strega Nona's babushka, swim flippers for Mr. Popper's Penguins, a shawl and boa from Fancy Nancy).
The campaign raises funds to purchase books for Akron Children's Hospital of the Mahoning Valley. The students collect pledges for a month long read-a-thon. Over the past nineteen years, the students have raised over $45,000 and have donated over 18,000 books.
