It’s almost time for the battle of 224 as the Canfield Football Team takes on the Poland Football Team in Canfield on October 26, 2018. Canfield Gridiron is hosting the Annual Community Bonfire on Thursday, October 25, 2018, at 6:30 p.m. at the High School. This community bonfire will include a "dog food" eating contest featuring CHS staff and students, performances from the Canfield Cardinal cheerleaders, drumline performances, and introductions of our football players, including speeches and pumpkin smashing from our football captains. The evening will culminate with the singing of the alma mater and the lighting of the bonfire. High Octane Coffee Co. will be in attendance, selling hot cider, hot chocolate, and coffee for $1.50 as well as donuts, cookies, and muffins for $1. The entire Canfield community is invited to attend to support the students of Canfield!
The first game between the two schools is believed to have taken place in 1921, with the Cards claiming a 7 – 0 victory in an 8 man football contest. Between then and 1943, informal research indicates the schools played frequently but not each year. In 1944, Canfield and Poland began the current yearly 11 man football series. Poland is believed to lead, 40 – 31 – 3. Since then, this has become a fierce rivalry in all sports that is known as the Battle of 224! At stake are bragging rights, as well as the Canfield-Poland Trophy, which is awarded to whichever school wins this contest.
