A kindness campaign was accumulating at Hilltop Elementary School during the month of January. Students were encouraged to be kind and when kindness was noticed, the student was given a snowflake to put on the office window. The students’ goal was to accumulate over one hundred fifty snowflakes, which was equivalent to "six inches of snow". The school collected almost three hundred snowflakes and students participated in an indoor kindness snowball fight to celebrate. The students wrote kindness messages and tips on paper snowballs not only did they enjoy throwing the snowballs but also reading and sharing the kindness notes.
This school-wide activity was a part of a Positive Behavior Interventions and Support program. PBIS is an approach that calls on schools to teach kids about behavior, just as they would teach about any other subject. PBIS ensures that students know what appropriate behaviors are in class, at lunch and on the bus.
