Dear Canfield Families and Community,
Reflecting on my first year as your Superintendent, I must admit that I was unsure of exactly what this school year was going to look like. Meeting with you virtually in August, I rolled out our restart plan, protocols, and explained that we would start with in-person learning and a new K-12 Cardinal Digital Academy for those that did not feel comfortable returning. I talked about remote learning possibilities. I wondered if we would even make it out of September. But we did. Amazed...but never surprised! Then came the holidays, and I wondered if we would make it through and we did. Next, I was really concerned that we would not finish the year after spring break, but we did! We did it together. Amazed...but never surprised in Canfield! Well done Cardinals.
As mentioned numerous times over the school year, we would not have been able to make it through the year without help from our parents. You were amazing! We finished the year in person because despite the social distancing, masks, desk shields, temperature station, and dreaded quarantines our entire educational community came together and gave their best! For this, I thank you.
As I look ahead to the 2021-2022 year, I am excited for a few curriculum changes. First and foremost, we will be welcoming Mr. John Vitto to a new role in the district as Assistant Superintendent/Curriculum Director. He will be facilitating several new initiatives such as STEM in both elementary schools. We will welcome a new teacher in this role and are adding maker spaces. Additionally, the elementaries will be implementing a new phonics curriculum. Our middle school is adding an 8th grade STEM class with an engineering focus as well as expanding the Health/Wellness class to include careers and digital citizenship. Our high school is adding a Building Trades Pre-Apprentice Program thanks to a grant we received. Finally, the Cardinal Digital Academy curriculum is shifting focus to select 9-12 grade students with special circumstances. We will not be using our own teachers as we believe they are needed in our classrooms for face to face instruction.
Our district will begin Strategic Planning which will guide us into 2027. The first step in this process is an online survey for our community to provide us with valuable information. Please take a few minutes to complete the survey on our district website by the end of July. A committee will be formed of community members, parents, staff, and students who will use the survey information as a guide while creating a comprehensive plan with measurable objectives and goals. The plan will ultimately serve as a tool for decision making and resource allocation.
In closing, thank you so much for the warm welcome to Canfield. It was an amazing school year. I would like to wish everyone a safe, healthy, and enjoyable summer break!
Joe Knoll, Superintendent
